Puppy in the Park

Project 3

Day 1

October 25 - 28, 2018

This is a playblast of the original animation from the files that where provided in the dropbox. I chose this sequence because I love dogs and I have never got the chance to work with an animated character before and I thought this would be the perfect scene for me.

These where some of the problems that I ran into when exporting the puppy from the orignal file into a new maya file. Luckily I only had two problems. One problem was that when I would try to move the puppy its teeth and eyes would get left behind. I solved this problem by trying many ways to export him. I ended up exporting him as an abc file and this kept his animation and let me scale, rotate, and translate him. The second problem I ran into was having the pivot point be at a different location than the actual mesh. When I would move the pivot point then translate him, click somewhere else, then click on his mesh again the pivot point moved back to an odd location. I actually never solved this issue but it didn't really impead my workflow and I was able to work around it.

This is a quick set up of what I was invisioning for my puppy to be in based off of his animation. I wanted him to stand up on a park bench and then jump off the side of the bench. I also thought of this scenario for him because I knew the park would be an interesting place to integrate something and had many benches for me to choose from depending on what angle I wanted for my final shot.

Day 2

This is a quick set up in maya for what I wanted to acomplis when I went out to shoot. I did this before I went out to shoot to already work out the correct angle and camera movement that would wokr best for the animation that I had.

October 28 - 30, 2018

This is the footage that I took at the park. When I got there I tried out a few different anlges but I settled on this one due to I would be able to have the puppy take up most of the frame and not have a lot of empty space.

Day 3

This is a gallery that shows my ball shot and my ball match. I did not take a clean plate shot with my ball in the exact camera angle but I did use this to set up the intesitiy and angle of my lights for when I would integrate my puppy into my footage.

October 30 - November 2, 2018

The following playblas is of my puppy placed where I would like him based off of the 3D traking that I did in nuke. I to shorten the lenght of the final animation due to the fact that his animation didn't line up exactly with my footage.

Below this is a quick render that I did to get the general feel of what he would look like in the scene.

Day 4

November 3 - 4, 2018

Here is the UV layout for the puppy that came with the model. In the UV editor they look nice and evenly laied out. But once I put a UV mapping texture on it a lot of stretching was revealed and this would cause future texuring problems.

This is the UV layout that I made from the UV's that where given from the original model. I cut and sew new seams to create a evenly laid out UV shell and I checked my progress through the uv mapping texture. Overall I think I did a pretty good job laying out these uv's this is only the second time laying out uvs and I was able to get minimal stretching. I still think I could make better use of the spacing of the uvs but these uvs get the job done.

Textures and Puppy Reference

Once I laid out my UV's I began to texture my puppy. for reference I looked at a corgi puppy. I chose this breed as a reference due to the similarities in face and body strucutre. It resembeled the face and body strucutre of 3D puppy. I also chose this breed as a reference due to its fur color. I though that this type of variation in the fur would be simpler than other breeds and it was a color that I thought would help the character stand out in the scene.

Day 5

This was one of the first render tests I did to test out the overall animation and textures.

November 5 - 8, 2018

This is a secondary render test that I did. From the last test I had the puppy have a darker fill, more saturated, adjusted his texture on his nose to make it more defined, and I added a shadow projection to get a sense of the shadow of the leaves on the trees being cast on him.

Day 6

November 9 - 12, 2018

Animation

Animation

This is my final animation of my puppy in the park. I am really happy with how he came out. I added in some background noise and a bark to mimick his animation. I adjusted a lot in my textures and matched the shadow better with a proper shadow all plate that I made in photoshop. Below are my final textures and bump map for him.

Final Textures and Bump Map

Textures & Bump Map

The first shot showcases all my textures that I worked on. I aded a fur texture over his exisitng texture to make him feel more realisitic. I also created a texture for his eyes to help make him feel more realistic. I then added a ramp to his nose to create variation in the color so when I rendered you could see his nostrils a bit clearer. I also only had a slight bump map for the fur and a strong bump map for his nose. I also added a pink subsurface layer to help with making the inside of his ears feel more soft and realistic.

Breakdown

Breakdown

Above is a breakdown of my animation and all the layers that went into his integration. I am really happy with the result. If I where to take this project further I would like to get another shot of the bench from a different angle to showcase the rest of the animation from the orginal file.
